I have scoured thru the rulebook, but am still unsure if downfield blocking is allowed. The rulebook states that teammates of a ball carrier may interfere by blocking, but no interlocking interference. Can anyone explain or clarify the downfield blocking rule please?

You can`t even be in front of a ball carrier. You can not block except at the line.

Adding to what player said...you can`t run downfield (forming a pick/shield) in front of the ball carrier. When someone has the ball, you have to basically stand there (if you are in front of them), or get behind, and be ready for a pitch.

What about setting a pick. If I`m standing still and my receiver runs past me close enough for the defender to run into me?

You Can

You can set a pick as long as it`s well disguised. We do it all the time...have guys run certain patterns toward certain defenders and have the primary receiver get the ball quickly...it ends up working like a screen pass. But you can`t make it LOOK blatent. Works like a champ though!
A good example would be a trips right play with one receiver lined up as a TE left. The inside trips WR runs a slant toward the MLB, the slot runs a fly toward the SS, and the outside WR runs a hook toward the OLB on his inside. Meanwhile, the QB immediately delivers a pass to the TE on a drag, just over the pass rush, but in front of the MLB and OLB. With three "picks" in place, there`s likely to be some decent daylight in front of the TE. You have to practice this well, and you shouldn`t have your receivers stop immediately when the ball is delivered. Otherwise it looks like you`re cheating right?
Draw it up, you`ll see what we`re doing there.

Interested: Not sure what book your "scoured" bit the USFFA National Rule Book (6th Ed.) page 9 (Rule 2 - Definitions: Section 2, Art 1. says No downfield blocking. Then proceeds to define same at the top of the next page. Check it out!

IF you are downfield, and a short pass is thrown, you can stand there. If your teammate with the ball runs past you, using you as a pick, and you have not moved, it`s perfectly legal.

VFFA: I read that, but my original post is also stated in the rulebook so I was wondering if screening was illegal past the line of scrimmage. The two conflicted so I just wanted to ask the ones who actually play. Thanks again for the responses.

That rule is a judgenment call and it depends on the refs and also what team is playing.Best to just not do it.
