The IFFL was founded in 1994 by Bruce Donald (pictured) when there were no other Spring Leagues in Northern Virginia, to give area flag football teams a Spring season. The player-run league launched its inaugural season (1994) with 9 teams playing at Hook Road. The league expanded rapidly. We now receive over 60 team applications per season, and accommodate as many teams as we can per field space. Our league is an affiliate of Virginia`s State Association (VFFA), which counts over 300 teams from member leagues all around the state, which all play the same style, same rules. The IFFL sends team to the annual state tournament every year.
In 2000, the IFFL expanded to offer Sunday Morning Fall Leagues.
The IFFL was built on several principles which remain to this day:
1) To provide competitive, high quality, Spring flag football
2) To keep league fees as low as possible.
3) To address what players really want in their league.
We`ve never failed to accomplish the first principle. As players, we are aware of what really matters to most teams: field quality, consistent officiating, rivalries, staying informed of league standings, and open door access to the league staff. We know that for most the season ends with the playoffs. Some teams play in and compete only in local tournaments, and a select few have the time or ambition to go to States or Nationals. We know this. We know you have jobs, wives, children, and/or other commitments. That`s why we won`t waste our time or your money. For those who so aspire, the VFFA and the USFFA will give you more than you can handle. Our resources go towards making your Sunday game as enjoyable and competitive as possible.
The IFFL is now managed by three coaches who have played in the League since the 1994 season.
