Tom,
Just wanted to point out yet another referee issue, this time from 24 Apr at Braddock Park. My field captain noted to the head official that some members of the other team were wearing shorts/pants with pockets. In response, the official said, "So what`s it to you?" and did nothing about the situation. Naturally, the health and safety of my players is the issue.
Two points...first, as teams that have been around a while, we have to realize that we are more up on the rules than the referees in charge on the field. Don`t we know by now what gear/equipment/attire is legal and more importantly safe and what isn`t? The teams in A/B should know better.
Second, and pardon my emphasis, WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET REFS THAT ARE CONSISTENT IN THIER UNDERSTANDING OF THE RULES? I realize that referees at all levels are going to vary with the calls they make and let go...that`s cool, but knowledge of the rules should be a prerequisite. These guys are the only people out here getting paid and they are substandard at best.
Referees should enforce the rules CONSISTENTLY. Someone in another thread called these refs the lowest of the low...I don`t think its true for all - there are some good crews out here, but since you are moving crews around to different fields every week, keep a tab on this one.

Don`t worry.Refs ignorance of the rulesis on every field. They are learning, but it is a painful process when they are learning during our games.

just a question. in our game today, with about 10 seconds left and us with the ball on about the 15 yd line...there was an inadvertant wistle. noone knew who called the timeout, but the refs still called the timeout, which allowed their D-Lineman to get back up to the LOS. (after a big gain by our team, we were settin up the no huddle to try to tie the game) after the refs huddled, they came to the conclusion that since they dont know who called the timout, they cant call it, so the time ran out and we lost 28 - 20. im not saying that we would have won, but we still had a chance at doing somethin. my question is this....arent we owed one last play since its the refs fault for the wistle?

MuddDawg, A lot of complaining for a 4-0 team. What would things be like if you guys lose a game? I saw 2 bad calls go in favor of your team that day. A BS roughing the passer call and a guy diving over the goaline for a score.

Muddawg,
You are mistaken the Blazers are not 4-0.They play at Autumnood.I watched that game and I agree with the Blazers. If the refs cannot verify which player called a time - out then they should not assume it was the offense. Why would they call a timout when they are calling a play from the line ? The refs then called a conference and decided to end the game. This is the second week in a row the refs have had problems with ending a game.Last week they decided to end the game because Mutiny was up by 21.That is correct except they allowed the game to continue after that and Lakeside INN scored soon after that. After the score the refs disallowed the score saying the game had already ended .Why did they allow play ? And since Lakeside scored- shouldn`t the game been continued ? Teams are getting the short end of the stick for the refs lack of knowledge. They are getting better, but when in doubt they should let the guys play.

*being up by 18+ points at the 2 minute warning, or being up by 35+ at any point ends the game (mercy rule).
*players should not be wearing untaped pocketed shorts or sweats
*inadvertant whistles are - unfortuneately - part of the game. If you would like us to investigate what happened at the end of the game send Rob (who handles interaction with the officials) an email: rob@iffl.us
Rob will speak to the head official this week and ask him to ensure with (remind) each crew that the first 2 items are being enforced.

What about the ball being placed on the ground for PAT`s and field goals ?
Last week I saw a team lose an extra point and the reason given was that it had to be on a block.I saw yesterday that a team was kicking off of the ground and when questioned - the refs said they had an option. Is this really an option and did the refs make a mistake ? We need to know before we play .

Visitor - Not complaining at all. I`d just like the guys who are getting paid to take this as seriously as the rest of us do. I don`t think that`s too much to ask.
Also, before trying to rip me for complaining, please re-read my initial post and note that the issue is not a "BS call". It`s about basic equipment regulations. I don`t care about bad calls after play continues...you move on and deal with whatever down-and-distance situation you are stuck in.
After a loss, I promise you won`t hear me complaining about bad calls. Most likely, I`ll be identifying what my team didn`t do correctly that put us in that position to begin with. Just don`t expect me to ever gripe about calls that go in my favor...that`s the other coach`s job. `Nuff said.

I agree with greg at the top stating we should have at least one chance to do something whether we win or lose it`s no problem we are just having fun, I am just speaking of fairness on that call. We have had no problems or anything till Sunday the 24th...

Well, there seems to be a couple of different issues in this string.
First, as far as an unknown timeout...I would need to hear the situation because I will have questions about how things happened. Please give me a call and I will try to sort that out and explain it so you understand why the officials called the game. What I can tell is someone called a T/O and no one owned up to calling it, therefore that truly is a delay of game which can warrant the end of a game in the final seconds. But that is just a generalization.
As far as pockets go, there should NOT be pockets. Meaning if your shorts/sweats have pockets you need to tape them up, now the same is NOT true if you participate in the FALL league, in the FALL league you CANNOT wear pockets at all, meaning they can`t even be taped.
Finally with the refs attitude I completely agree. I would like to speak you privately about that situation.
And being a former official I have to let you know it is difficult to maintain different rules from different leagues. Hence, my goal is to have the FCFFL and IFFL have the same rules. And those rules are derived from the rules that are state sanctioned that we use at the State Tournament. If you follow the direction on the website there is a link to the State Rules w/ IFFL modifications. If you need any further help please don`t hesitate to contact me @ 703/371-4952. Hope this helped some issues. I am here to help. Thanks!
Sincerely,
Rob-Commish
