The Lions have been around for 5 seasons now and some of the players on the team played a couple seasons before. So i guess i have played a total of 7 season in IFFL. My opinion would have to be the CCR NOVAs are probably the best team in the last 10 seasons. They were B league champions when i first came in but they have grown into much more. Hats off to the NOVA`s and their constistant work on the field.

I would have to say over the years this league has truly developed into a fine competitive league. The best team without a doubt has been the Red Dogs/Blue Iguana/My Plumber (same team). This team has not only performed at a top level in the area but also at states. No other team in the last 10 years has won so many "A" state titles. Hats off to them!!
As far as the NOVA`s- yes a good group but what have they done at the A level- not much. The two brothers they had were great athletes but head cases. Their old QB was a major threat but hurt his knee which has caused them some tough times. Now with the merger look out this spring- they could be tough.
Now the team that I would have to say has potential to sprout into the next dynasty would have to be the KLions. This team has easily beaten the NOVAS and MY PLUMBER in the last 2 years. Within the last 5 years this team has I think only lost 19 games. Which means there a lot of wins on the other side of that. Four guys on that squad have game breaking speed and great athleticism. A team that I have watched grow together. Each year they look stronger and stronger. They have been undefeated now in the last two regular seasons and played in the last 3 championship games. Looks like they need to learn to win the big game. We shall see what happens with the new look they have this spring. Note -they switched to their old QB. He seems more mature and sound. There coach calls all the plays from the sideline-Guruu? Hmmm goes to show what a true team they have become.
This to me is the next true strength from the "A" Division.
Other danger on the radar has to be the Sharks. With there speed and good fundamentals keep an eye on them in fall.
Plato-out!

Good write up on the history. As for the Lions, I did notice they changed QB`s. Not sure their offense changed that much though, they have big play guys at multiple positions and still put up points. I think their real strength is their defense, which is better this spring than it has ever been. A couple of their guys do too much talking, but to be perfectly honest those guys that talk are also pretty legit players...so I can`t complain too much. A couple real classy guys on that team as well. It`ll be interesting to see if they can finally win a championship.

First, the Red Dogs and Blue Iguana were bitter rivals, NOT THE SAME TEAM, Blue Iguana changed sponsors to My Plumber like 2 years ago, so that is the same team. In the fairfax league, it is hard, the spring and fall are such different animals. for spring I`d say Novas, they are there in or near the finals each year as far back as I can remember, in the fall, too close to call, but in terms of representing the area in tournaments be it state or nationals, got to be My Plumber/Blue Iguana, they won 3 states in a row and back-to-back nationals, Kilroys, Novas, whoever, no team HAS EVER DONE THAT. also keep in mind that the fairfax leagues are great but the toughest competition top to bottom is at the tourneys, check vffa.com and see who the #1 ranked team OF ALL TIME is........

Rhinos Vet-
First, the Rhinos have not played 3 straight seasons at the A level. Fall 04 they played in the B division (check the stats under the FCFFL). They lost in the first round of the B PLAYOFFS.
Second, undefeated regular season records in the last 2 springs (04,05) are a little misleading. They went 13-0, but did not play 1 A division team (Lions,NOVAs,Canes,My Plumber,Raiders,Sharks,Naturals,Mac Daddies). Again they LOST IN THE FIRST ROUND in spring 04.
Third, in all their years playing they have been to ONE SEMIFINAL game (and lost).
Just like the Mudd Dawgs learned last week, you don`t run your mouth until you beat the big boys (A teams from above).

Correction, can I assume by your post that you play on an "A" league team that has always beat us in the past? For some reason, you failed to mention who you play for in your email.
As you seem to be an expert on the history of NOVA flag football, I am sure you just overlooked a few things.
Not that it has any impact on the Spring 2005 season, but over the years the Rhinos have beat Kilroy Lions, Novas, My Plumber, Mac Daddies, Field Generals (Fairfax Crab House)and Church Raiders.
With that said, we have also lost to most of these teams over the years as well.
We never played the Sharks and have never managed to beat the Canes (or what ever they were calling themselves that year) or the dang "option" Raiders.
As you are an expert on the subject, I am sure you know all about our 29 game regular season winning streak (although I am sure we have not beat any quality opponents during this streak)and our numerous (1) C league regular and post season championships, (2) B league regular season championships or (3)IFFL division championships. Although you did notice that by some miracle we even managed to make it to the IFFL final 4 one spring.
Boy do we have some nerve thinking we are an OK team.
Enough about my sqaud. I have seen 14 years of IFFL/Fairfax County football and Brion`s Grill/Blue Iguana/My Plumber is the team I would rank as my all-time number 1.
Hopefully we win a playoff game or two over a team that will impress Correction. But if not, I am sure Correction will let us know about it.
Good luck to all the teams tommorow

Rhinos, just play your game and get the job done, don`t worry about what naysayers are spewing, you guys have a competitive team every year but just haven`t won it all yet, it will come. I play for My Plumber and can remember just a few years ago when all the ffx county leagues were just about strong ON FIELD competition, but man, all this trash talk from teams that have really won NOTHING. I feel that the tourneys (states and nat`ls) are where you make your hay. Only a few teams in the area have even won an A/B state. Those guys know what it is to win something meaningful. Not to put down winning this league, but keep it in perspective. Winning this spring league is great and all but there are really only a handful of "A" quality teams. Anyway, enough rambling, good luck tomorrow to everyone, Rhinos, Novas, Kilroys, `Canes, all the vets especially. Go out there and show the young bucks of the league what is what and how Northern Virginia Flag Football teams represent ON THE FIELD.
#1 (or #7 if hall is around.....)

Rhinos-
I see some people are taking some shots at your team. The problem is, they have a point. I don`t know about your 29 game win streak but I do know this. SPRING02 (6-1 reg seas...1st round loss) SPRING03 (3-2 reg seas...2nd round loss) SPRING04 (6-0 reg seas...1st round loss) FALL04 (8-0 reg seas...1st round loss). See a pattern. Gotta win in the playoffs if you want respect!

Part of this is philosophical. If you think in MLB it is the Yankees, then you got to go with My Plumber. But if you are a Yankee Hater who refuses to call them a team but instead a bunch of mercenaries, then maybe you might feel the same way about MP. Rumor is the old commish was ruthless about grabbing all the best talent for this team. I PERSONALLY DONT KNOW IF THIS IS TRUE....but if it is, it may change your perspective in favor of true recreational teams that play together as friends. Hats off to the current commishes who go WAY out of there way to NOT take advantage of their situation. If I am wrong about MP, my apologies. If it is true, just like the Yankees, there is nothing wrong with it/it just changes some people`s perspective. THIS IS NOT A HATE POST JUST AN OBSERVATION!!!

That thing about Butch (old commish) recruiting the best players from other teams is true but really can you blame him? If he did not already have the best team no one would go play for him.
Players who wanted to win States real bad and go to nationals jumped on that bandwagon. They had the best jerseys and everything paid for travel included. The core of that team was pretty much the same year in and year out and you know they were called something else back in the 80`s (not Brians Grill)
Butch never really talked to players to recruit them but it was other players on his team that put that little bling bling bug in the ears of star players from other teams.
It is a close call between Reddogs (another team that grabbed players year to year) and Plumber for best team in the last 10 years but the nod goes to Plumber.

| |
|
Jun 14, 2005 9:56 PM | | ; |
How did travel and all that get paid for? We cant even get a sponsor for the regular season!

| |
|
r
Jun 15, 2005 11:34 AM | | ; |
if you get a good sponsor they will pay for a lot of things, and the good thing about having a sponsor that pays for stuff like league fees, hotels or a bus if needed, is you can never have guys on the team complaining about playing time and such, if you didn`t pay, you don`t have to play.

|

Do you know of any sponsors out there?

| |
|
o look
Jun 15, 2005 12:26 PM | | ; |
you have to seek out sponsorship, go to a local business or a local bar or restaurant and ask the manager if they would be interested in sponsoring your team. it is a form of advertising for the company and if you win and are good it can get them business. many times a team gets sponsored by a local bar and then frequents the joint after games and stuff, both sides win, the bar gets business from the team itself and their friends/family, and in return the bar buys the team uniforms, pays league fees and stuff, win-win on both sides....if your team performs it makes it that much better tho

I will reveal who I think is the greatest team of all-time, but first some background on my team, the CCR NOVAs:
I have been in this league with the NOVAs since 1990 (in fact, that year we were known as the Saints; The NOVAs wouldn`t come into existence until a couple more seasons when Shay Mattera joined the team) and therefore I have seen practically every team that`s come through in the last 15 years. Back in the early `90`s we were a consistent, but unspectacular "B" level team who won a couple B-championships, but could never break through to the A-level. Our merger with our long-time sponsor Crystal City Restaurant gave us the beef on the offensive and defensive lines to finally compete at the highest level of flag football, and we have since won several A-level championships, two State B Tourneys, and were runner-up at Nationals.
With our success through the years we have earned respect around the league as a tough, disciplined team whose whole was greater than its parts. Many an athletic team would scoff when they saw our bunch of slow, old guys on the sideline, but at the end of the day as they walked off the field in defeat, they recognized us for the smart, passionate, football players we were.
With that said, there is only one team that routinely beat us no matter how well we played. They are clearly the class of not just Northern Virginia, but all of Virginia and the US as well, as their numerous State and National Championships will attest. They are the team that beat us in double OT in the A-State Finals, and the ones who beat us in the National Championship game the following year. We just couldn`t get past them when it counted. My Plumber, I tip my hat to you. You`re clearly the greatest team to play in the last 10 years.

Novas QB, thanks for the love. We really respect you guys on and off the field. It is always so fun to play you guys because there is no whining and complaining, just tough competition. You guys may be on your way to the state title this year if you keep it up. Stay healthy and good luck through December! See you in the fall

About 3-4 years ago when My Plumber was in their prime (ie killed EVERYONE), they lost a huge upset game (this was a Spring championship game) to a team called (I think) the Field Generals. That team had, on that day anyways, the best qb I have seen in flag. Unsackable, GREAT vision, good touch...just a complete playmaker. Does anyone know what happened to that guy?

QB of Field Generals went on to play for NOVAS II over the past few years.
Field Generals lost to the Rhinos in the final four the next spring season denying My Plumber their shot at the much-anticipated rematch.

we were the field generals at that time. before we were known by bottomknockers and later fairfax crabhouse. yes we beat my plumber when they had everyone and also dominated total package in that season. we went undeafeted that year and the following spring and fall season, winning 18 games in row within a 3 season period, and beat some team everyone was scared of at that time for some reason call the wolfpack(alot of people said they were better than the red dogs.yeah right.)then we merge with novas for three years and got pushed to the side this season for some reason, i guess thats the thanks we get for getting them their first first real championship, b states.anyway the core group of players are still around and looking for a team to play with. anyone who wants to win in the fall should get in contact with us. greatest team last 10 years has to be no question about it is the red dogs and then my plumber, not to hate on my plumber but we never beat the red dogs, and we have beaten my plumber a few times. good luck to everyone left in the playoffs. takem down novas, i still root for yall.

Field Generals,
Plumber has won THREE A STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS and TWO NATIONALS. Your team hasnt even won one game at A States and never qualified for Nats. And you never beat Plumber when they had everybody and you were not undefeated for three seasons you only won one Spring league and never won a fairfax A league. Nobody was scared of Wolfpack except for maybe you so congrats on beating them whenever that was. Heros in your own mind...

A couple of comments from a historical point of view. Plumber and RedDogs had some great battles over the years. There were some other solid teams in FFx A (ie Capitol Countdown - State Champs in 1999). Plumber`s consectutive State run along with their 2 national titles set them apart. There is no 1(a) or 1 (b). Plumber is #1 and Reddogs are #2. The real debate starts at #3 (up for later discussion). When you talk about beating Plumber you need to keep the following in perspective:
1. Did you beat them in the Fall or Spring?
2. Did you beat them pre-2000 or post 2000?
If you beat them in the Fall Season (pre-2000), you beat a solid A league team. Good for you. However, the performance of their team was raised to a new level sometime around 2000. If you beat them in the Fall (post 2000), you beat the area`s best team. Therefore, congrats should go to Sharks and Kilroy`s (and very few others, if any).
If you beat them in the Spring Season (pre-2000), you beat a good team. Not the same A league team you would have seen in the Fall (pre-2000) season. While they had some of the same players, it was clearly not the same team. The same holds true if you beat Plumber in the Spring (post 2000). Their recent spring teams have in no-way been a reflection of their State or National teams.
The guys from Plumber can correct my comments if they are not factual. I guess Plumber set the bar so high, everyone is looking the oppty to say they beat them. Well done Plumber!
Just the facts....

funny man, just funny, as for joe friday, YOU ARE DEAD ON MAN, anyone who has ever seen a my plumber team in the spring knows damn well that is not the same team we roll with in the fall, plain and simple. some of us played with no fear this season, like 4 of us i think, because the entire team can`t commit to play in the spring, so if you think no fear is my plumber you are wrong there too. also, the guy from the field generals is totally wrong when he said we picked up some of the red dogs. and the only time i played the red dogs was in my first fall season and we whupped that ass. oh yeah, and the spring the field generals beat them (actually called the commercial errectors) was the spring before i joined the team.
