This message thread is for NOVAs players, Scrubs players, and any game spectators to post a game summary, observations, or comments. We will eventually take the info posted here and add it as a write-up attached to the score in the team history database. Please do not post insults or whining in this thread - lets keep it for what it is intended for.

We feel like the friggin Red Sox (before they finally won last year). We have found a way to loose in 4 straight spring playoffs...we just dont know how to win!!! Thats alright. It was a fun game. Good news NOVAs: we have lost to the eventual champ 3 times in a row...you are golden!
Good luck and stay healthy...and if you figure out who these foul mouthed whiners are saying nasty things on the message board...kick their asses!!!!

Great opening round game between the Novas and the Scrubs, who have to be the best #16 seed ever to play in the IFFL playoffs. CCR was nearly done in by three endzone picks by their QB, but prevailed thanks to a bend, but don`t break defense.
The Scrubs took the opening kickoff and after three nonproductive plays, inexplicably went for it on fourth down deep in their own territory (perhaps they were trying the Tennessee Titan`s strategy of keeping Peyton Manning off the field as much as possible). It backfired, as CCR held and scored on a third down strike from QB John Hering to RB Pete Angstadt. The extra point made it 7-0. On the next possession, the Scrubs once again went for it on fourth down in their own territory and once again were stopped giving CCR a golden opportunity to extend their lead. After a long second down play to G John Finlay gave the NOVAs a third-and-goal from the 1-yard line, the Scrubs came up big with their first of three INTs, when Hering tried to force a pass into WR Dave Szczesniak. The Scrubs capitalized by driving the length of the field to score, but a missed XP made the score 7-6. CCR took over with less than 2 minutes left in the half and quickly drove to paydirt and a 14-6 lead on Angstadt`s second touchdown of the day. The half ended 14-6.
The second half was a defensive struggle with CCR`s defense continuing to provide great field position and the Scrubs secondary continuing to keep the game close by making endzone interceptions. Finally, with less than a minute in the game, the Scrubs offense broke through and scored on a fourth down pass to get within a two-point conversion of sending the game to overtime. However, the 2pt pass attempt fell incomplete in the back of the endzone and CCR had survived a scare to advance to the second round.

yep, thats pretty much how i remember it.
we tend to go for it on 4th and 5 or less, no matter where we are b/c we dont have a punter worth crap/we only loose about 20 yards of field position at most if we dont get it. conversely, unless the opposition has a great field goal kicker, they will comfortably go for it so close to our endzone. that means if we punted we would, at some point, have to stop the nova`s from getting 10-15 yards in four plays. for us, odds of getting first are better. now you know why i annoy my team: i play this game more like a math geek than an athlete!!!

ps thanks for the kind words.

Not sure anyone cares, but the second time we went for it on 4th we made it ( you guys didnt rush anyone). I know it looks stupid to go for it on 4th, but our qb`s cojones (sp?) is part of our identity...good or bad. Then our qb hit our right guard for a 75 yarder (despite the "inadvertant whistle" we still scored). Missed the PAT. We had two snaps go over his head that killed drives and a catchable ball tipped for a pick. your defense would not let us do what we like to do: bombs away!!! Way to stick to your guns. Bend dont break is right! You have to play smart discliplined mistake free ball against the NOVA`s. Great game. CYA in the Fall.

Scrubs that was a great game and make sure you guys get your butts down to States this year. You got a good team that has a legitmate shot at winning that tournement if you can get all your players to go. Also it`s in Richmond this year!

How do you qualify for states?

| |
|
Jun 15, 2005 9:07 PM | | ; |
Easy if you want to go to States just get in touch with Tom Vincent between spring and fall we never fill up all the slots we have so if any team wants to go to states I`m sure we can get you a slot.
Most of the league in Va have 8 to 12 teams and with a 12 team league the state will give 3 bids so you offer to the top three teams and work you way down untill all 3 bids are taken. With the IFFL fall and spring along with FX a,b,c leagues we have about 20 to 30 bids every year and most of the time about 12 to 15 teams from Northern va go leaving us with about 15 open bids.

States are always the second weekend of December and last year I think it was $168.00 per team.

"How do you get to play in the BarkBowl tournament?"
Its first come first served, once we announce the date and open registration (probably the week of Championship Sunday). We`ll take 12 teams.
"How do you qualify for states?"
Rob/Shay (whoever posted the answer) is correct that FCFFl and the IFFL never fill their allotment of slots. Bids go to the top 3 (or 4) teams in each division determined in FCFFL by regular season standings and in the IFFL by post-playoff placement. We will contact coaches regarding bids the week before Thanksgiving.
Teams can play in either the A or B State Tournament. If you make the semis in B (Lazy Sundae and CCR NOVAs in 2004), you must play in A the next year. States are in Richmond this year.
