OK the game is won or lose by players but what team has the best coach`s. I`m not with the Muddawgs but have heard good things about him and his organizational skills. Carlos from Kilroys is very organized as well but has very solid players all A level it seem the Muddawgs win more with less? My opinion is a good coach takes players that are not world class but make them play at an A level by being well organized and also is able to keep players content, cause we all want to play both ways all the time. The Rhinos and Gooldrush coachs both seem to have that ability. Any other opinions, maybe we can Kornheiser and Wilbon in on this debate

I play for Outcast and our coach does a lot for this team while working a demanding night schedule at his job.We have a lot of players in the military and as most of you have seen , come to game with eight or nine players.he gets the most out of who is there and treats us like men .We all respect each other and the teams we play.He keeps us informed , in shape and in tune with the Man Upstairs who gives us this life and the talent to play this game. All coaches go through a lot to keep a team happy and together, but our coach goes that extra mile.He is a player coach and deserves to be recognized.Outcast is family/friends first and team second and we owe it all to our coach.I don`t know if he is the best , but he is the best for us.Hats off to all coaches.Peace !

LOL We don`t even have 25 players on our roster. But I agree Leroy does deserve lots of respect. All the coaches should. I think it would be hard and maybe unfair to try to pick just one person as "Best Coach".

Well said Outcast. Gotta give a hand to your coach for his dedication, hardwork and spiritualness. Nice to see you guys being led by someone like that.
With that said, our coach has got to get some recognition for his incredible dedication. In addition to putting in countless hours keeping us organized and unified, he is also one of the IFFL founding fathers and current commissioners. He has managed to maintain a large presence within the Virginia Flag Football community despite the fact that he spent a good portion of the last few years serving our country with the Army Special Forces (he volunteered to go to Iraq!). When he`s not overseas, he`s protecting our interests here at home as a DC lawman. Basically, all of his limited free time is spent working flag football issues and coaching the NOVAs. And did I mention that despite the fact that we have a very generous sponsor in Crystal City Restaurant, he frequently drops large amounts of his own cash to keep us in the best equipment?
Congratulations Shay Mattera. I`m sure the players and teams in the IFFL are happy to have you running things, but we NOVAs are extremely lucky to have you as coach.

I played for Shay awhile back and the NOVAS qb is right.Shay is also one that goes the extra mile.I am glad I know the guy.
P.S. I `ve been on OUTCAST for several seasons and the only time we had 25 people together was on a trip or party !!!! LOL

Novas QB - you do have a good coach and a "great" sponsor - A Strip Joint for those of you who dont know what CCR is. Technically, it is called a Gentlemen`s Club. Now that I mention it, I think I`ll head down for a Gentlemen`s Lunch!

There is no best coach. They are all good hearted men that have thier own specialty on the side line. From the best record to the worst, for all you do this buds for you. Nothing but respect for all of you.

I definitely agree that Shay deserves much respect for running a team, league, and serving his country, as well as being an all-around good guy.
I`ve also gotta give respect to my man Rob Holland who also runs a team and is one of the commissioners. Rob saved the day on Sunday as he was out checking the fields at Baron Cameron on Saturday (on his own time) and noticed a girls soccer tournament which was scheduled for all day Sat and Sun. Had he not been out checking on Sat, many of us would have found out Sunday (late or too late) that we wouldn`t be playing.
In addition, Rob makes it fun playing with the `Canes as we always feel welcome in the family and since there are no practices, we can just show up at the games to play.
Thanks a lot Rob

I have known Rob for years and I have learned to appreciate what he is doing in flag football.I don`t always agree and have had differences from time to time, but what he, tom, shay and other coaches and commissioners are doing allow me to play the game I enjoy .Thanks Rob , it`s all good man.

I gotta vote for my own coach (Rhinos) in this category. He, like all other coaches, dedicates a lot of his free time to the sole purpose of allowing grown men to relive a little of their glory days once a week and act like children.
Thanks Chris... and thanks to all the other coaches out there that make this such a fun, competitive league.

OK, I`ll weigh in on this...to me the best coaches are guys that consistently put up a winning record time and again in any league, any division, under any circumstances. They are guys that make the most of what they have to work with. There is an important distinguishing characteristic of some in this league. Instead of giving you a top five, this time I`ll give you three categories of coaches and give you my pick for which is the best in each...
OK...Category Number One: The Player / Coach
This is the guy that not only does the dirty work of putting together a team, running a practice or two, getting everybody through all the administrative bumps of a season, but also straps the flag belt over his protruding waistline and goes to work on the field. My pick here: Mike Katterjohn from Goldrush. Here`s a guy that has been through hell and back in this league and can do the impossible with whatever guys show up to play football. His entire team basically walked on him one year ago and in a matter of a few weeks, he scraped together some friends, went 6-1 in B tying him with his former team Mutiny and MuddDawgs, then went on to BEAT that former team in the B championship...now that`s either great coaching or a man on a mission. Probably both.
Category Number Two: The General Manager
This type of coach is a sideline warrior. Though his skills have diminished considerably over the years, his love of the game still drives him to get out of bed on Sunday morning and create a great playing environment for OTHER PEOPLE! His only pleasure stems from planning, organizing, and making things happen from the sideline every week. My choice here is Rob from the MuddDawgs. This guy not only put together a decent A/B team, he`s got a farm team to boot! This, well, organization came out of nowhere two years ago and now some have ranked them in the top 15 in IFFL. He`s got tryouts up, have you seen the website, and by the way, he doesn`t seem to have any trouble getting about 30 players out there every Sunday to do his bidding. Probably trying in vein to get a job with some NFL team. Guess everybody is still living out thier fantasies. Even the coaches.
Category Number Three: The Commissioner / Coach
This is the type of coach that put together a great football team, then realized that they had nobody to play against, so he just went ahead and made a whole damn league. He gets his arse up at 5 AM to drive around to every field and check its conditions, then makes the loop again to ensure the refs show up. Finally, after all that, he goes out and runs a team, then spends the afternoon collecting scores, updating standings and monitoring a message board full of creeps who don`t appreciate him. The pickings are a bit thin in this category, so I`m just going to go three-way tie. OK, I won`t do that...my vote goes to Rob. He runs the FCFFL in the fall but still finds time to help out in the spring with IFFL, Bark Bowl in the summer, and States in the winter. A year-round guy. Not only that, he`s got the dirty job of notifying teams at 5PM on a Tuesday night that their game was postponed because they got bumped by the pee-wee team that got rained out five days prior. I don`t envy the guy...just saying thanks.

I haven`t "technically" coached in this league, but I`ve lead my team in Madden 2005 to 6 straight Super Bowl titles, so I really think I deserve some consideration. My third-down package on offense is awesome, I even put the QB in the shotgun formation.

You must have never played for Mike of Goldrush. He is an ass. Why do you think his whole team left him. He has the same O since day one. He blames everything on his players. He points them out to the whole team. He acts like a child on the sideline. Totaly over looks his vets when he gets a couple of new guys. Why do you think he has so much turnover every year. I would so Rob from the Hurricanes is the best. He keeps his players every year.

Rob may not be keeping all his players this year. Already heard talk of people changing teams to get some more pt.

I always thought having a non-playing coach in flag football was kind of silly.

Not silly if you`re serious about winning it all.

Thanks to those that gave me props. I don`t find it silly for two reasons. First, you have to have a leader that is unbiased. When you both play and coach, you tend to bias your decisions based on the adrenaline rush that you get from being "in the battle". A good example would be to try for the first down on 4th and 1 from your own end before the game is in doubt. Your "rush" would tell you to go, but a good decision would be to punt. Secondly, having a fixed pair of eyes on the sideline gives you a macroscopic view of the field that you don`t have when you are scrambling from a rusher, blocking the D-Lineman in front of you, or chasing a WR in coverage. You have someone that sees the whole field and can make adjustments to game changes that some player coaches may never even see coming. Personnel changes by the other team by example.

MuddDawg don`t feel the need to defend yourself. If your having fun doing what you doing than don`t sweat the people getting down on you. Something must be working with your performance in the A`s this year.
