Idea

With all the hot air on this board about what team is the best, and who has beaten whom, the greater powers that be in Northern Virginia Flag Football may consider the creation of a special invitation-only champions league. I`m not talking "A" here...
Think about the British soccer system for a minute. They have a premier division reserved for the top 20? teams. Then each subsequent division below, First Division, Second Division, etc has about 20 teams at the next level down...
We could debate endlessly about these teams and who is better than whom. I say, let`s allow these teams to compete in both thier home league as well as in a special champions league that lets them all square off against each other for a season. Lets set it up as an eight team table to begin with and play a seven game round robin, followed by seeded single-elimination playoffs. That should settle the debates for now.
After the first season of this, the league member teams would be comprised of the winners of the following leagues:
1) FCFFL "A"
2) FCFFL "B"
3) IFFL "A" (Spring)
4) IFFL "A" (Fall)
5) IFFL "B" (Spring)
6) IFFL "B" (Fall)
7) NVFFA
8) Arlington
I considered maybe adding a wild-card or two, but if you didn`t win anything, then you don`t deserve to play in the champions division, now do you? Another idea is that if one team wins more than one league championship (i.e. FCFFL "A" and IFFL "A" Spring) then the replacement team would be chosen from the runner-up teams by the commissioners.
Just a thought. It could be fun, but also could be a nightmare. For scheduling, maybe these could be Saturday games to avoid conflicts with the weeknight (M-Th) and Sunday league games. This could also be a weeknight spring league.
To extrapolate this idea further, we have a quasi-informal method of assigning teams to divisions right now...why not do it the right way. In order to advance, you must finish in the top two of your eight team division and you will replace the bottom two in the division above. All new teams would start in the lowest division and would have to build and improve to move up. As I said, we have an informal way of doing this now, let`s solidify it a bit.
Here are some sample divisions based on this concept...
Premier Division
Kilroy`s Lions
CCR NOVAs
Hurricanes
Sharks
My Plumber
Kern`s
Rhinos
Naturals
First Division
Larry`s
Mac Daddies
Mudd Dawgs
Goin Deep
Broadlands Pub
Dietz Nutz
Outcast
Lazy Sundae
Second Division
No Fear
Goldrush
Mutiny
All Makes
Titans
Wolverines
Los Banditos
Potomac
Third Division
MOFOs
Fighting Chickens
Lake Side Inn
Bearcats
Blazers
Magnums
Purple Haze
Duck Poo Crew
Fourth Division
(Smattering of novice and new teams)
If you finish top two in your division, you move up the next season...bottom two, you move down. Simple. To facilitate people`s schedules, simply break the groups above into separate leagues of weeknight and Sunday entries.
