subject: "Spring League should have Levels"

Should the spring league have the A,B, and C levels? I think so... Look at the divisions now after two, some three games. It is obvious some teams should not be playing against others. This could effect the future of the league because teams could quit. I read in previous post that we have a great and competative league, which I feel is true. We have plenty of firepower in our league: Wolves, Scavengers, Collision, Lazy Sundae, Dietz Nuts (out 2011), Penetrators, Rhinos, Pain, etc are all good. Teams like the Ligers, Outcast, and United have worked their way up the brackets and division slowly and now are hangin with the big boys. This process of going through the rankings is a process that should of been applied this year. A teams should only play against each other, therefore other teams will not lose confidence to keep working up the rankings.

Let it go, QBJ. This issue has been addressed, debated, and resolved, so move on. Everyone knew what they were getting into when they signed up. Yes, there will be some mismatches during the regular season (ie Wolves vs Rebels last week) and the new teams will have to take their lumps against the established veteran squads. But things will work themselves out in the postseason and I promise you that the world will not come to an end.

Relax dude, this is football. This isn`t Little League where everyone gets a trophy just for participating. If there are teams in this league who will "lose confidence" because they can`t compete, then they should either put on their big boy pants and deal with it, or just play coed volleyball instead.

It`s a well thought out argument, but the flip side of that argument is we`ll just become a stronger league by using this format. Teams in the past were content to stay in B or C because they either doubted their ability to move up or they just didn`t want to have to play the better competition.

By taking this format, teams are forced to test themselves against the better competition and in some cases (i.e. Ligers) have found out they can run with the better teams. And the ones who don`t have success are still making themselves better by playing the stronger competition. You do learn from the playing the veteran A teams.

Also, don`t forget that in the Fall we will have A and B divisions based on how teams place this Spring. That will allow the A teams to play A competition and B teams to play B competition to get ready for States.

The old saying is still true, if you want to be the best you have to play the best.

Hey Al,,, great points and I do believe that the league teams that stick around and play with the veteran`s will improve. But... the point made below makes good sense as well.
If you put in the time already and your team is established. You do not want to play against a C team on Sunday morning. The spring season is the only time some of these athletes can play or some teams can participate. Also having to deal with family, church, and activities make it difficult for others to participate.
If I was a player that worked hard to improve my team and myself, I wouldn`t want to play against some C team and god forbid get hurt and out for the season. You can get hurt at anytime, anygame. We should let the elite play amongst themselves, especially if we have enough teams register. If you "A" team QB get hurt by a pass rusher from a new team that doesn`t not know the rules or is frustrated by the way flag is played compared to tackle and hits your QB. Your pissed, your team is done and nobody from that C team gives a darn. There are plenty of What if`s.

I would agree that it`s probably harder for some teams to get excited to play a team they consider below their caliber, but that`s part of the game in my opinion. You need to play the team that`s in front of you every week, regardless of skill level.

As for your argument that certain players may feel they`re wasting their time and talents playing a B or C level team, then I`d argue they probably have to high an opinion of themselves. Not to mention that`s an extremely lame argument. Does my team, as an A level team, want to play lower level teams? Not really, but if you`re truly at that level you`ll get the win and move on.

Addressing injuries I believe has no merit in this discussion. Injuries can and will happen no matter the level of play, and you`ll be upset that they happened no matter how they happened. If a player injuries another player because he doesn`t understand the game, then his coach/manager did a piss poor job getting him ready to play. Not to mention, I see more contact on the QB/ball carrier at the higher levels (ie States) than C teams.

Man up, bro! Whether your opponent is considered better than you, evenly matched, or inferior, it shouldn`t matter. Real players just want to get out there and play ball, no matter who is lined up across from them.

The possibility of getting injured is the unfortunate reality of this game, no matter what level you play on. There will always be "what ifs" in football. But if you are playing this game with the constant fear of getting injured and having to deal with the injustice of not facing an equally matched opponent, then maybe the IFFL isn`t the place for you.

In the perfect scenario, I`m sure that Shay and everyone involved would love to have properly aligned, and evenly designated A, B, and C/Novice divisions as we`ve had in seasons past. But the low number of registered teams this season didn`t make that possible, so we are making due with what we have.

We are about to go into Week 3 of a 6-week season (weather permitting). C`mon, man. Get over it!

Holy vienna sausages!

Bundy, did you just say Ligers are playing better with the better teams? WTF dude, look at their schedule? They are not playing against competition. They are getting a free ride to the A or B chip. The divisions are some B.S. and everyone knows it. Certain teams are getting shafted because the some divisions are stronger than others. Teams like TNT and Ligers should play against each other and you can add SC and WTF to that mix, but look at the divisions each of these teams are in? This Open format is horrible in every sense. If Lazy goes undefeated in the regular season, that is nothing to be proud of considering they won`t play a competitive team in any of their games. If an open format is all that can be doen, at least separate the divisions more fairly.

Lazy had a tough go of it against Outcast. They will probably win the division , but it won`t be as easy as you make it seem.Is that a knock against Lazy or the teams in their division? What is your team ??????

This subject has already been covered and most of this has already been put out by me, but since it on the message board here it is again along with some more facts about this league.

Again all the coaches were notified about the Open format for this Spirng and the plans for the Fall of 2011 and Spring of 2012 season. So if your a player and your not happy with the format sorry about that but your coach was informed this would be an Open league only this season.

The IFFL was started by me and Bruce Donald in 1994, to be an Open league only and it stayed that way till 1997 when added a Novice league and after two season we went back to an Open league format. From 1999 till 2003 it was only Open and we had it up to 45 teams as an Open League, we also had more fields so we could have that many teams.

2004 we started the Novice league back up and at first it was good because it was what is was supposed to be, a Novice league for "new teams" only not C and B teams. Then over the years teams that should have moved up didn`t and other teams would change their name to go down and it turned into a true C level league made up of some Novice teams with B and C level teams that should have been playing in the Open league. So we went back to the Open format last fall and for this spring to reset things.

The fact is the IFFL was never set up to be an A/B and C level league like we do in the weeknight league. If you want to play C then you should be playing in the FCFFL night league that Tom and I run now. This league was set up to be Open, but we have done the Open and Novice format and the A/B format.

With that this is the future of the league as already put out to all the coaches and the MB a few weeks ago.

FALL OF 2011: We will go to an A/B format, there will be no Novice or C league in the fall. 50% of the teams will have to play in the A league. The playoffs will still be the same A/B/C.

SPRING 2012: We will either have an A/B format, or we may have an Open and Novice Format.

If we do the Open and Novice league format then the Novice league will be for new teams and teams that have played less then 2 years, not B or C teams that change their name to try to stay in the Novice league

Like I said before I appreciate everyone`s opinion on this matter and if any of you want to talk to me offline on this you can email anytime at shay@iffl.us.

Thanks

The points are flying around and the arguement still stands. Anyone here who is pissed off about the "A" division teams are too proud or whatever to play against "C" teams needs to relax and think. If I played flag football for 10 years and you worked your way up to the A division. You already have put in your time within a league that has grown and prospered with talent. You don`t want to wake up at 8am and go to the field with your 30`s year old body and play against somebody who just started this season and by halftime your thinkin, wow, I woke up for this. We have over 30 teams in this league, I know there is a definate 10 "A" quality teams here, why aren`t they facing each other. There would not be any issues with top teams getting a cake walk through their division or getting placed in a weak division. Why are we playing only 6 games? because we didn`t split up the division. Out of six games, how many are legit quality games before we get into the playoff. If everyone is preaching about Lazy one and done, think about Ligers, Greenback, or Imposters in the playoffs.
The injury quotes is a huge debate. Please don`t give my crap about, "wipe your eyes and stop your crying". Its bad enough having to deal with top tier athletes in the A division banging you up, now imagine getting hurt with someone that doesn`t know the rules or cares to read the IFFL flag handbook. Not every team has a COACH like you AL!! Some teams just register, ask a couple of their boys and come out on Sunday.... to face who knows... the Wolves. What if one of them cut blocked, tackled, a fight breaks out and boom. Top A player down,..... a onetime, one week, nobody out into the sunset because he didn`t know he couldn`t do that. Who you going to cry too then. Your mama?
Big Al, your a good coach and I watched and played against you guys several times. Throughout the years you have gotten better and in a couple seasons, you guys could rule the "A" league. I will post this question again, I could promise that your opinion will be different, especially when you can`t field your highly trained veterans team to make it agains the Rebels. Afterall the Scavengers beat SC with 7 players, I think thats the new trend.

Like Shay said: The coaches were informed weeks ago what the format of the league would be this season. So you had ample time consider whether or not you wanted to play. Now that two weeks of the season are in the can, you come crying.

Keep it real, Jack, you probably play for one of the C teams who got its pants pulled down by one of the elite A squads. Because if you were an actual 10-year veteran (as you claim) then you would know how this league works.

If this league is so bad and your are so worried about your team of scary-talented elite athletes getting hurt against the rest of us inferior squads, it`s not too late to get your money back and play elsewhere.

Otherwise, shut yer piehole and play ball!
