I went 13-5 last week picking games. Not too shabby overall, but who the hell knew the Pitbulls cared so little about getting the #1 seed that they decided to try and beat Collision with 6 and a half players (Yes, I know they technically had 7, but one of them was their kicker)? And The Pens over the Wolves 14-0? Really? Smells like a forfeit to me.
And then Dietze ties The Truth??? Bundy must`ve ate himself into a food coma out of happiness afterwards. So basically, it seems like most of the teams that already had an A playoff spot, just didn`t care this week.
Round One:
Collision vs The Truth - Collision owns a 2-0 record over The Truth, but they almost lost to the Pitbulls, and would`ve had a tie if the doggies kicker hadn`t gone all Scott Norwood on them. Look for this game to be closer than it should be, but at the end of the day look for The Bubba Gump Shrimp company to send Bundy and The Truth home one and done. United vs Pitbulls - I`m sorry, even if the Pitbulls show up with 6 and half again they should be able to handle United. I don`t know about these rumors that United tried to lose on purpose to get into B, but if it`s true they probably should have tried a little harder. Go ahead and list them as the Sunset West Also-Ran as the Pits and their second string slip into the second round.
Goldrush vs The Penetrators - Goldrush in the A playoffs, wow. Goldrush reminds of Jason McElwain right now. You want to root for the special needs team to do well, but on the inside, you know this is their 15 minutes of fame and no one`s going to remember you in a month. Case in point, I had to google "******ed ball boy makes 3 pointers" to even pull the J-Mac reference. Pretty soon you`ll get Goldrush with almost the same search. Pens win easily.
Wolves vs Banditos - El chupar la polla Lobos. If you can read that, stay the F outta Arizona. The Wolves slipped by Banditos two weeks ago, and unless their injury situation improves, I wouldn`t look for them to get too far in this tournament. This one could go either way, but I`m calling it my upset special of the week as the Banditos win in a classic Robots vs Wolves showdown.

Disappointing
May 17, 2010 2:42 PM | | ; |
These first round games are pretty damn disappointing for the A playoffs. Look where these teams were in the Fall
Collision vs The Truth - One and done in the Fall A playoffs versus the B runner-up. Both of these teams are high B-low A.
United vs. Pitbulls - One and done in the Fall B playoffs (regular season champs) versus HALF of the Fall A champs. A real thriller of a showdown.
Goldrush vs. The Penetrators - A 2-6 B team last fall that lost to BOTH Chuck Norris and the Midgets versus the fourth place B team. Neither of these teams have business sniffing the A playoffs.
Wolves vs. Banditos - HALF of a one and done A playoff team that finished at the top of the A league (even they even show with 8) versus the B+ winners from weeknight.
I mean, I know it`s the wildcard round or whatever, but damn where`s the exciting matchups between elite teams? When does that happen in this bracket?

wow we have ONE game where we have 7 players and now it`s we don`t care?? We`ve had some extenuating circumstances this season and Sunday was a tough day to get our players out. Why don`t you worry about your own team SWAMI, Pitbulls will be just fine.

@Disappointing - Well put. I think `Wildcard Round` really gives the wrong impression here. Try `Greeting Card Round`. I think the real issue is there are no elite teams in A this year.

OK then, who would put in their places?
In my opinion the only team that doesn`t realy "belong" is GR. If it wasn`t for half of Outcast jumping ship and going to GR they wouldn`t be where they are. (They didn`t realy jump ship, but that`s another discussion for another time.) Don`t forget that the Knights didn`t bring 8 when these two played either.
Seems like a pretty balanced first round considering there was no MD. league this season.

Not sure what an "elite" team is, but there are 4 teams in these playoffs who have won multiple A/open championships, Dietze Nuts, Lazy, Rhinos, Pitbulls, and one team, Wolves, who has won one A/open title.

@History - Look, in all honesty, yeah you`re right. Those teams have a great history. But I have to say, this is a what have you done for me lately league? Dietze is what? 4 years removed from their last `ship and just tied an average at best Truth team, Lazy hasn`t taken the hardware home since 2006.
Pits, Rhinos and Wolves all have more recent success, but look at them right now. The Wolves are so beat up they`re on fifth string WRs, the Rhinos are still breaking in a new QB who may be good eventually, but I think he`s at least a year or two away and the Pitbulls lost some serious talent in the offseason and now get to finish their playoffs without Cube and most likely T2.
So, in all honesty I`m just not sure there`s a true elite team in the mix this year.

Swami...If we are fortunate enough to win it all....of course you`ll be invited to the celebration.
I don`t like the fact that we`re playing the same divisional opponents in the 2nd round that we`ve played all year. I was hoping to play some new teams but hey...we will play the hand we were dealt.

I agree
May 17, 2010 5:30 PM | | ; |
the bye week teams should play cross division games to give teams from the same division a chance to play each other in a championship grudge match if the chips were to fall that way.

|
Swami Sez
May 17, 2010 8:53 PM | | ; |
@Woody and "I agree" - I think it`d have been nicer to see more cross divisional games as well, it`s where the chips fell. However it`s definitely setup to improve the chances of a cross divisional championship.

THE RHINOS QB IS GOOD AND HE HAS A WR THAT IS VERY VERY GOOD. PLUS FROM WHAT I HAVE OBSERVED THESE PLAYOFFS WILL COME DOWN TO MATCHUPS. WITH ALL THE TEAMS BEING SOLID. EVERYONE STAY HEALTHY BALL OUT
| |
|
Okay
May 18, 2010 10:30 AM | | ; |
All the teams are solid because of so many players switching teams. It is like the A playoff teams are in a tourney of a pick up league. I have never seen so many players change teams from season to season . It is all good , but there needs to be a seperation of teams that recruit and teams that stay the same year after year.
| |
|
What?
May 18, 2010 10:44 AM | | ; |
I`m sorry but all good teams add players season to season, if you don`t you`re going to get passed by.
| |
|
True
May 18, 2010 10:53 AM | | ; |
But it makes it harder for teams that have don`t recruit players from other teams. It seems like you have 6-8 teams that recruit other teams best players. It is one thing to add players , it is another all together to merge teams or recruit good players from other teams. It is what it is , but it really puts a distinctive gap between the levels of play between teams.
| |
|
Who
May 18, 2010 10:58 AM | | ; |
are the 6-8 teams that recruit?
| |
|
Okay
May 18, 2010 11:03 AM | | ; |
so we should just let those guys play somewhere else then? There isn`t THAT much scavenging going on. Show me the team that`s made up of other teams best players in the A playoffs this year?
| |
|
Sometimes
May 18, 2010 11:47 AM | | ; |
Let`s be serious though. Sometimes teams merge because both teams are average at best and have a solid 6-7 guys. After they merge they become a much stronger and better team. It`s not like people are being paid to play. If someone wants to switch teams or openly recruit a guy to play with them who cares? They are only trying to make their squad better.

From what I`ve seen the Rhinos are an above average A team but will not beat the top 3 from the East to get to the finals. QB is average, WR is good but not very very good, and their D is overrated. Only teams they beat in the A playoffs are United and Gold Rush. Pitbulls beat them easily in round 2.

Has nothing to do with rhinos. And I don`t see how it matters whether they won last fall or not. The wolves were great last year and look what happened. Last season doesn`t matter because no one except snob has won two seasons in a row. I guess whoever plays in the best division is the likely winner from what I`m understanding.

I think Pitbulls have the edge but will not win easily. The 27-0 score last fall means nothing. The Rhinos have several new players that are good athletes including a good WR and QB is getting better. This will be the best game of the 2nd round.
I say Pitbulls 17-14

Fine. Since the board is dead today I`ll do a top 5:
1 - Dietze 2 - Pitbulls 3 - Pain 4 - Rhinos 5 - Lazy Sundae
Dietze is the consensus #1. Pitbulls tied them, but I`ll be interested to see how the loss of Cube hurts them. Pain is playing their best ball to date and could win it all. I put Rhinos ahead of Lazy because they didn`t play with their starting QB. I think full squad versus full squad Rhinos are better.

in capital letters. Saw the GR/Lazy Sundae game last week. To put it bluntly, the GR QB was scared and their OLine did nothing to calm his fears. He was throwing the ball up for grabs without even looking? It was sad really. Lazy was handed that W, literally.

@ Ya Know - I have the Penetrators winning this one. I haven`t seen much of Goldrush this season but I have seen the Pens up close and personally several times this season and they aren`t a team that should be taken lightly.
@ Wolves - They are pretty banged up at the moment but hopefully the forfeit loss they took in the season finale will be a benefit. They might come into the playoffs healthier. Regardless, Jeremy is healthy and will put his team in position to win as long as he has 7 other bodies around him.
I think the Wolves vs. Banditos and Collision vs. Truth will be very interesting matchups.

Bundy, your top 5 was rocked...3 of the 5 (Rhinos, Lazy, Pain) went 1 and done!
Consensus was Banditos would take out Wolves...not even close, 28-0.
Consensus was Pitts would destroy United...took late int for Pitts to hold on.
Penns shock eveyone and make final 4! (join 07 Outlaws & Larrys teams that were suprise final 4 teams)
Rhinos post 4th straight 1 & done in spring playoffs.
Lazy goes from 09 runner-up to 1 & done...getting crushed 28-7.
