Deferring?

Please provide clarification. During the coin toss, team A decided to "defer" the option. Team "B" decided to kick/play defense, thus giving team A the ball first.
At half time, team A argued that because they deferred, they should get the ball in the 2nd half as well, thus getting the ball twice.
The refs talked about it for literally 7-9 minutes before deciding that team B should get the ball to start the 2nd half.
1) Is there even such thing as "deferring" in flag football?
2) Isn`t it automatic that if a team receives the ball first, they kick to begin the 2nd half?
There was mass confusion regarding this. Any clarification would be appreciated.

If your team wins the coin toss, just tell them, "I want the ball to start the second half." Cuts down all the confusion.

what should have happened (assuming defering is allowed) is once the first team decided to take the ball in the 2nd half, then the other team should have automatically had to receive it the first half and not been given a choice to kick or receive.
team A should have just said, "we will kick". done and done.

IF A wins the toss and say we diff, that means A chooses to recieve or Kick, dumb teams that lose the toss always fall for this one, we do it in Md B will choose to kick first half and then second half comes around and A has the option to kick or recieve, those are the rules

I think this is more of an issue at States and Nationals where the rules are different. It happened to TC and they had to kick off to The Firm both halves, but in this league it shouldn`t be an issue. Just like Hollywood said tell them you want the ball in the second half.

I asked about this last season on the officals Board.
The way I asked was weather the coin toss was for descision or ball.
This has come up before. On a super windy day, you want side no matter what, or a super sunny day.
There needs to be the same call across the board. I`ve had it where a team was dumb enough to decide to kick, and the ref has enforced it as descion, not ball. So if team a decides to kick first, team B can decide to take the ball second half.
Carlton`s response was that its about ball not kick / side / etc.

maybe different in other leagues, but if the complaint is true, it`s the same as the maryland league if u defer, that means u get 2nd half rights to do as u please> it`s a dumb rule, but if u defer, and your opponents chooses to kick, u will have the option to kick or recieve 2nd half
point blank. If u lose the toss, and your opponent defers, you have no option to kick or recieve 2nd half, and if the referees aren`t sure of the rules that could be a issue also>

It`s really not that tough to understand. Both teams will eventually get to choose whether or not to kick or receive. If you win the toss you get the privalege of choosing when you want to make that decision. If you defer you are choosing to make your choice in the 2nd half. This means the other team gets the choice first.
So if you don`t win the toss choose receive!

obviously the rule is flawed. There should never be a circumstance where a team gets the ball first to start both halves. Regardless if someone is "paying attention" or not, the defer option should be eliminated from this league, period.

This rule is AMENDMENT by VFFA
Rule 3 Section 1, Art 1 (c)AND Art 2 are REPLACED by
“at half, goals will be reversed, and 1st half kicking team shall be 2nd half receiving team.
It is imposable for a team to kick or receive both half’s (teams both have at lease 8 players)

The problem is that the real refs that worked 95% of the games in iffl spring and fall in `09 are with a different assoc. during the weeknight games and what we have are the rejects. the rule book says if you kick @ the start of the gm then you get the ball @ the start of the 2nd half. these guys are killing me and if seems whoever is in charge doesn`t care or is trying to run a good leaque in the ground. we need to pay the weeknight refs whatever they what to get what we pay for these fake refs are a joke!!!!!!!!!!!

The team that went on defense the 1st half got the ball in the 2nd half. The team that did "defer" said you could do that! Which all of you know is incorrect.

These are some new faces because over 1/2 the refs have less than 3 years exp. some started doing flag last fall, some are doing flag for the 1st time official 1 won`t tell you all that he doesn`t have the b@lls to be honest so what type of ref is he if he lies about the refs he sends out don`t want hime making a game deciding call don`t think he knows flag either
