I have emailed all of last years coaches today, who have until 9:00 AM on TUE 6/27 to pre-register for the Bark Bowl. At 9:00 AM on 6/27 registration will formally open, and there will be a registration link on the homepage (and here) for any team to register.

We have room for only 16 teams, and based on email inquiries - it could fill faster this year than last year.

Tournament is a benefit to the Humane Society of Fairfax County, and will be held Sunday August 6th at Baron Cameron Park.

The tournament format remains the same; 16 teams playing double elimination through to the quarterfinals. The way it works is that 4/16 teams will win their first two games and place directly into the quarterfinals (at which point the tournament is single elimination). An additional 4 teams (each with only one loss) will work their way to the quarterfinals through the losers` bracket.

Games will start at 8:00 AM, with the championship game to be played around 5:30 PM. There will be 27 games played in all. Your team will have to win 5 or 6 games to win the tournament - its an endurance event, not a sprint.

Cost is $260.00 per team, which includes a $50 donation to the HSFC, and 12 t-shirts per team. Awards will go to the tournament winner and runner-up.

This is not meant to be a knock on Tom, Rob, and Shay by any means, as the Bark Bowl (and everything else you guys run) is a great tournament and great event. The only issue I have is that the tournament has become such a big deal and that there are so many teams who want to be a part that entrance in the tournament is pretty much on a first-come-first-serve basis. This is a great chance for all the top teams to play each other, and this tournament as far as competitiveness is somewhere between A and B States.

I`m hoping some of the weaker teams recognize how tough this tournament is and won`t enter, but I would hate for garbage teams like "Who Next" to take the spot of a truly competitive team. This is a great chance for some top notch competition, so it would be a waste of time for everyone involved for some of the lower level teams to enter. Is there any way to put teams like this on a "waiting list" only to enter if another team falls through? I don`t know if this would happen, but it would be a disgrace for a "Who Next" take a spot in the tournament instead of a Sharks, My Plumber, Kerns, etc... just because they paid first.

I understand your point, I also play on one of the top A teams. However, the reality of the situation that you describe is far to hard to put together. The bottom line is it`s a benefit for charity and open to anyone. I agree, a Who Next team will be two and done but that`s the way it`s going to be. There is no way to reserve spots for certain teams and have others be wait listed. The veteran teams you mentioned should just be sure to get their registration in first.

Why don`t you put a tournament together with a benefit and you can limit it to A and B teams, if others aren`t worthy?

"it would be a disgrace for a "Who Next" take a spot in the tournament instead of a Sharks, My Plumber, Kerns, etc... just because they paid first."

I understand where you`re coming from, and way back when this was an semi-invitational tournament - but half of the teams invited couldn`t make it and we wound up chasing down teams up until the last minute, and not being able to even pay the refs until all the money was collected a week later.

Of the teams you mentioned, the Sharks are already in (paid as has 3 other teams so far from last year), Kerns can pre-register (if they pay before TUE they will not get shut out of the tournament), My Plumber does not get into gear until a few weeks before the Fall season. I have spoken to the My Plumber coach the past 2 years about the tournament and they were not interested. They are always one of the first teams to pay for league play, so if they wanted to play in it I imagine they would.

We also get teams from various area leagues who are new to the rules and style of play, and want to test themselves against some of the better VFFA teams.

With having to win 5 or 6 games, the Bark Bowl is also a different kind of tournament. I think with the teams that do participate, there is enough competition to where half the teams in it could be favored. Its really a matter of who can play the best with nothing left in the tank.

I hope this helps you understand the concept a little better and answers some of your questions.

I second Coach`s sentiment. Tom, for an extra nominal fee, can we get Who`s Next for our first game? That way if we only have 5 people show up for the first game, we`ll still be in good shape, and everyone else will be better rested for the "real" teams.

You guys bring this sh*t on your selves. Your boy Dre and your QB talking madd sh*t and ain`t even made a dent in this league. I guess you thought you was going to come into this league and run sh*t right away. No, it don`t work that way. Ask the final four teams in the A division how long it took them to get that good. Be humble, let your play speak for yourselves, and you won`t be prone to all the abuse on this messageboard. Ask the Lions how humbling this league and messageboard can be.

this is nothin but fun. you guys dont even know us and you guys talk about us. we have one guy who talks trash on our team. Dre, he is usually the quitest most humble person on the field. but when people talk about him or his teammates is when he talks. and we have played against most of those a and b league teams. we broke away from our past team which made us a C league team. we have the talent to compete with any of those teams. and what abuse, this is a flag football league, we never see you fellas outside the field. so this all means nothing.

Well, its hard to say. For some reason, our linemen find an excuse not to come up and play multi-games when its like 90+ degrees out there (can`t blame`em, lol). Last yr, we ended up running the "oopty oop" against everybody after Lazy beat us and we`ve never done that before. So, who knows, if we get more than 10 this yr, I`ll be happy.

HAHAHAHA, we bring it on our selves. "people fear what they dont understand, and hate what they can`t conquer." You guys can talk all the trash you want, and you won`t dent us!!! We`re not the lions!! Everyone outside of Who`s Next has a life outside of "Flag Football". Just know that not everyone shares your feelings. Even so, we don`t mind being the most hated team in the league. If you have such a big problem with us, set up a game and we`ll come play you. Call us out, we don`t back down. IF you stand behhind what you say, especially to TOM, then come out and let "YOUR PLAYING DO THE TALKING". If none you can do that, keep hating, its a great laugh for us, we enjoy all the attention we get. Lets us know how great and important we are. If we weren`t people just wouldn`t bother, we us. So thank you to all our IFFL fans, we love you too!!

who`s next (to whoop us), you`re only getting attention because you`re ****y but you stink. you may not be the worst team in the league (you`re real close, though), but you`re the only team that bad who actually talks like you`re good.

what`s funny is the post above referring to you being new in the league expecting to do something. your team photo looks similar to the iron men/killer bees, so you`ve been in this league for years, but are still one of the worst. the c league was created for teams like you who just aren`t competitive athletically and who got mercy ruled so many times, but most of these teams eventually move up. now there`s absolutely nothing wrong with playing in the novice league, but to come on the messageboard talking about how your players are the best in the league makes me think you have some issues that you may need some help with. go on with that "me against the world attitude" but it has nothing to do with hate (there`s no reason to hate on someone like you). it looks like plenty of teams have let their "play do the talking against you."

That was someone else`s team who we played for, this is our first year playing on our own. Everyone on who`s next deserves to be on it. UNlike the other teams, we didn`t play with them throughout the whole season. Players have to be 18 to play in this league so some of our players couldn`t make it, but enough we are putting our book for sale soon, so you guys can buy it. So all you great Flag football teams set up a game with us!! Since you are so great come show us, and stop talking.

"so i apologize to concerned and Tom for taking up a "worthy" teams spot"

You don`t have to apologize to anyone, and we`d love to have you guys participate. Like I said, after the pre-registration period its first come, first served. There are no worthy or unworthy teams - only those more motivated to play than others. There is a surprise team that makes the semis every year - maybe that will be you?

I think you misunderstood when I said "I know where you are coming from". I meant that I understand that sentiment and its not the first time someone has suggested that. I don`t agree with it for the reaons given, and we`re not going to change anything about the way we register teams.

"How are the seedings determined for the Bark Bowl?"

Its a random draw, done in front of any team that wants to send a rep. We had 4 teams show for the draw last year. If the Harrisonburg teams travelling 3 hours to get here request a 9:00 start (1st round is 4 games at 8:00, 4 games at 9:00), we will leaves those names out of the hat until we fill the 4 8:00 games first. The drawback to that is that they are more likely to play each other in the first or second game.

Damn, that line-up looks rough already. This is going to be interesting.

Who Next, I don`t know any of you guys, but as good as the teams will be in the Bowl, they can all be beat, so get in while you can and go for what you know. Win or lose, you`ll have a gauge for where you are and what you can improve...and ALL teams can be improved. And, if you manage to surprise some folks (maybe even yourselves) :-) all the better.
