What is the best defense to run against a spread offense?

How many should you rush?

Where should you position fast players?

Thanks

OITS, shouldn`t be a problem if you truly have one of the best defenses in the league!

if you haven`t practiced defending it yet you`re in for a treat. a good spread offense will eat you alive. you need to find your best matchups and solve your rushing needs all on the fly. by the time you think you`ve figured it out you`re down a couple TD`s. good luck with that.

There are actually 3 teams that uses the spread. Wolves, Diesel, and DM. Wolves like to do a lot of gadget plays where as Diesel likes to spread the ball around field. DM has a very athletic QB which makes him hard to contain. The best way to stop the spread is to get to the QB be he can make his decision on where he wants to throw the ball. You can try to man up across the board but those 3 teams have great receivers and smart QB`s to know where the mismatch is. Good luck to whoever is playing these 3 teams. We still have not yet figured a way to stop the spread.

HAHA...three days before they play the Wolves and OITS is just NOW trying to figure out what they`re going to do on Defense. I thought they had the best defense in their division?! This is great!

If you think you`re D-line is good enough, stick with them and send a mix of 2 or 3. They have to be a bit disciplined though to rush in the obvious passing lanes (quick slant, dump to center and linemen. Your LB`s should play up. These guys better be good flag pullers though. If you`re D-line does their job, they will force the pass in the first 3 seconds or so. That pass will have to be a quick out, slant or dump of some sort. That`s were the LB`s come in. If they don`t pull flags, you just let a 5 yd play go for 10+ yrds.

I also believe you can sacrifice an athletic safety for a smart safety. If you play this D right, there shouldn`t be too many deep bombs. You`re safety just has to be warry of the double pass and a few other trick plays. All of your defensive athleticism serves you best at the front lines of the action - not sitting in center field.

The spread ain`t as scarry as it sounds. Without having the benefit of seeing D-Mob, I`d say the Wolves do run it best, but if you challenge the more athletic go-to guys, jam them and slow up the routes and chip those crossing routes inside of 5 yrds - you might have a chance. I know they average about 4 TD`s a game, but I`d argue those opponents aren`t known for their defense. Pain (aguably a second tier A team) held them to 14. But if you really wanna know, ask the Rhinos. 3 pts! I bet the Lions/Wolves never scored that few....

Diesel`s spread... I`m not so sold on. I don`t want to discredit these fellas because 6 and 0 IS 6 and 0! But you wonder if CCR Nova`s and Lazy aren`t undergoing a bit of slump. The rest of that division is $hit times 20! Diesel may be the top seed most poised for an upset. They`re young and there`s definately some talent, but it`s not deep talent. I`d offer against that spread, you may be able to get away with man coverage, certainly a mixed-man coverage.

Played them once this year, and watched them (playing before us) twice. They haven`t run many trick plays this year it seems. Also, their best WR (#5) has missed a ton of games. Unfortunately I think this has made their offense better, because they are really spreading the ball around even more so. Everyone is involved and gets the ball. "Actually" is correct, defending the spread is awfully tough.

The Wolves might have had an off day against Pain, having scored in the upper 30`s and 40`s against them the other times they`ve played. You`re right though, it will come down to flag pulling.

One other thing that has gotten over looked, you have to SCORE against the good teams as well. These top teams all have very good defenses, so it`s not like you can just stop their offense once and be good, you have to stop them a lot. Easier said than done.

stopping the spread

May 30, 2008
10:04 AM
;
1)Sit your slowest players on the bench.
2)Send two fast players to rush the QB, one to chase the other to cut-off and close. That means if the QB scrambles to his left the rusher coming at him to his left is the cutoff and should rush that angle/block his view and let the other quick guy get the flag from behind as QB will slow when he sees the cutoff coming. If you chase and don`t cutoff and he gets around you you`re done. Rotate them to keep the rush fresh.
3)play 5 DBs across 5-7 yd off the line to jump slants and quick passes to WR at the line.
4)man up on center
5)do not let anyone run by you without a good hard chuck
6)Fly to the ball once it crosses the line even if it looks like someone else is going to pull the flag you need to get up there to cover any possible pitch. Spread means they want to spread the defense too and get the ball to guys in open space. Don`t wait for the action to come to you.

The plan is to take away the long ball by not giving the QB time to spot up and get the pass away. As long as you get your chuck in and you are rushing with speed not size the WR will not be where the QB wants them before the rush gets there. For every 5 or 10 yard dump they manage to get you should get an incompletion or sack which neutralizes the gains. Yes you are covering 7 with 6 in the secondary but if your rush is on you are not giving the QB time to survey the coverage. If you try to cover 7 with 7 and rush only 1 you will get burned.

If they run a spread with a RB back there then rush 2 at the QB and 1 directly at the RB.

I don`t think Lazy is undergoing a bit of a slump. They have man handled every other team they have played. Lazy still has one of the best D in the league and for Diesel to put up 3 td`s on them is pretty impressive in my book.

HOF coach, you are right about putting the best where the action is and you are right about scoring on them. All 3 teams have sound D as well.

Building on what "stop" wrote above (which was a good post), these good teams will adjust, so you need to be ready to as well. Against us, we had some success against the Wolves offense, and they quickly came out in a normal offense and quickly scored a few td`s. It wasn`t pretty. So be ready to call a timeout if need be and change re-act to what they are doing.

This goes without saying, but everything that`s being said here is pretty good, yet at the end of the day you still have to execute. These top teams, are there for a reason. Seeing that it`s already Friday, and it sounds like people are just NOW trying to come up with a new defense, I smell beat down.

Having Watched Wolves

Having seen both of those games (Wolves vs. Rhinos & Pain). Both of those defenses stopped the Wolves flat with aggressive coverage plus a consistent pressure Dline forcing QB Wolves to make the rare bad pass. Rhinos D is tough and Pain`s is underrated. But as a Championship team does, the Wolves adjusted and dug into their bag of gadget plays and laterals to move the ball. Not sure OITS is ready for that. 28-7.

I agree...

You must jam the Wolves receivers off the line to counter their spread attack. The downside is if you miss it`s 6 on the board in the blink of an eye. I forgot to mention they have a T.O. replica...you might have a problem with the jam there!

Thanks for all the helpful advice. Lets see what happens since they are exposed now.

One other thing...

May 30, 2008
1:17 PM
;
If I read Tom`s post right this game is on the turf at Lake Fairfax. MUCH different field than Hook. Wider, and plays faster. Obviously this will help the OITS QB a little since he`s got good wheels (at least he ran a lot against us), but the Wolves on a wide, turf field are a different beast.

As for their other games, my guess is that if the Wolves played Pain 10 times, they`d blow them out 9 times. Pain might have caught them on an off day like the poster above said. Rhino`s-Wolves (saw this one myself)was just a good game. The Wolves moved the ball on them, just didn`t get points. There`s a reason those are the two best teams in the division. And OITS isn`t even 3rd. Or 4th. MAYBE 5th.

Funny

I love the buildup for this game, especially since it`s one of the best teams against a mid-level at best team. I honestly can not wait to see what the final score is. If it is something in the nighborhood of 35-7 or worse, I might die of laughter.

One other note

May 30, 2008
1:22 PM
;
Many times, especially Wolves, spread teams will fudge around their line players. If they come out with an unbalanced line, you can disrupt the play effectively by putting a fast rusher on the center`s weak side. He should be able to get enough of a jump to force the immediate throw to the strong side, where it is straight flag pulling.

We played the Wolves and our only regret is that we didn`t go deep on them like we had planned. All the talk has been about how to stop the spread, don`t worry so much about that. This game is meant for an offense to score so worry about putting points up on there "D". Like I started to mentioned before, they play a true man with NO safety! My advice would be to go deep and go deep often! If you think your Qb is going to run on them all day your horribly mistaken.

I know they have a really good rush, do you have time to go deep on them?

May 30, 2008

no. If you don`t solve their 3 man speed rush early they`ll even bring 4. no way they let QB run. That`s why they can run that cover scheme. Their rush is on you. Try taking a 15 step drop if you want to throw deep. hope your QB has a strong noodle to go with those wheels.

My Plumber. Their QB used to stand like 20 yards behind the line. Took an hour to get to him!
