Biggest difference between open and novice?

I thought this would spark up some good debating as well as some good reading for us that work.

My personal opinion is talent only gets you so far in this league. In novice you can get away with being more talented than the other teams to be competitive. Open on the other hand is far more geared towards teamwork, organization, and cohesiveness to go along with the talent you have. In conclusion it`s all about taking the talent you have and developing team cohesion and organization to excel to the upper ranks of the league. I have been around this league for a good while now and can tell you from first hand experience that an organized team will beat a disorganized team of misfits who have better talent across the board.

Your thoughts guys?

I agree 100%...just take United vs. Shower game. Shower definitely has more talents then United.

I think it happens in Novice as well. We`re fairly talented, but I think teams with better cohesiveness have beaten us this year. We`re coming together in that regard though.

What makes Diesel and Wolves the top two teams and how much better are they then CN and TA

open, the best teams immediately recognize your weaknesses and will exploit them all day. when you adjust, they`ll find another weak spot and attack that. in novice teams tend to be one dimensional, relying on a single strong point in their O and D. good open teams have very few weak spots - their pass rush is good, their cover schemes are good, their qbs know when to scramble, where to place the balls, release quickly. the only way to beat a top open team is to bring a complete game with very few holes and the ability to adjust quickly.

if you been the league awhile, as most teams in open, you`ve probably seen or played against other teams. you know the defense they run, who`s their go to guy, etc. that helps alot too. which is a disadvantage for the novice guys.

I`m going to ignore all that talk with DM, Wolves, Sharks and Diesel.

For the C teams or the new teams in the open, any team can become a contender in this league. It just takes a little time to develop a system that makes you work best as a team. If you notice, all the top ranked teams have been playing together for years.

I believe my team is a good example of progression. This is our 5th season in the league. I am the only original Diesel since starting this team. We took home the C championship our first season. After winning the C, We thought we were badass and could handle any of the open league teams. I was dead wrong. We went 0-7 our debut into the open league. The team was basically falling apart because losing can do that to a team. I had to do some major recruiting and was lucky enough to find some great players. Our third season we were able to make the A playoffs but got spanked by the Badboyz in the first round. Our 4th season we had a rough start but finally came up with a system that worked well with our personnel. We ended up winning the B championship. Now we are at our 5th season and we are having a great season. We don`t have the fastest guys or the best athletes in the league but we play very well together. It took us about 3 season to build that chemistry to play at a high level.

I agree with 7

Losing games will show the true colors of each individual and will definitely tear a team apart. Glad you guys finally found a system that works cus you guys are one of the most consistent teams I`ve seen.

We don`t really have normal practices. Before a season starts we traditionally line up scrimmages with the Wolves, Rhinos, United, Pain and sometime other teams. I think hands on with game situation is the best way to learn and get better.

Also you can learn from playing other teams.

Thanks for the insight Diesel 7. It`s my first year playing flag, and the same for most of my teammates. Looks like we got a long way to go to get where we want to be.

Players come and go but I think its important for the core players to stick around to have that chemistry and continuity. If you can get the same group of core players, its much easier to add people and have them learn your system. Hopefully you can find athletes that can adapt to your game play. I know theres a lot of super fly brothers out there that think they are the *ish but can not play a team game. Those are the ones you don`t want on your team.

Agree with Diesel 7. My first season in the league I played with an open team. We were ok and I thought I could start a team from scratch and compete. Boy was I wrong. It was hard and by time playoffs rolled around we only had 6 guys show up. Of those 6, 5 are still on the team. We dropped down to C this season. We rebuilt and we were able to pick up some great players and hopefully we will be able to stay together. It`s hard to gel if you are loosing. This season has been different. I can honestly say this year has been a team effort from the start. We are winning games and in the process coming together as a team. We still have a ways to go but, we are getting there. My advice to all the new teams, both Novice and Open, is to take your time. Watch other games/ teams play. See what they are doing and scrimmage as much as possible. Practice is great but, nothing will substitute playing games.

While its not mandatory that new teams start out in Novice, its highly recommended.

There have been cases where a new team has excelled out of the gate, but for every one of those teams there are ten others who endure a long season.

I understand and have personally experienced the feeling you get when you put your weekend pickup game buddies into a regimented league and look over the level options, "Bob can probably burn any of those guys", "No one will stop Joe on the pass rush", "Bill will pick off anything within 5 yards of him", "Mike can knock a can off the bench from 50 yards away", we`re not going to waste our time in the C League.

As you get ready to play your first game against a team of guys 10-20 years your seniors you chuckle and wonder if they know what they have coming to them.

The refs call the game at the two minute warning and your on the losing end of a 30-0 score. What happened with this team of great athletes you assembled?

What happened is that the team you played reacted instinctively to every aspect of your game. Once they identified your strengths and weaknesses, they led you away from your strengths towards your weaknesses and you didn`t realize it. At the same time, they led you away from their weaknesses and pushed you into their strengths. Because your team is new and unseasoned, once the first domino fell, the rest came down pretty quickly.

There is a mental aspect to any sport. Once you`re down a few scores it becomes that much harder to focus on what you came out to do, and that much easier to fall into the trap of solving the problem in stop gap and disjointed ways.

The Novice League is a place to get to know your own team, to learn to recognize strategy and patterns, and to build comraderie and confidence; however, I will never stop a new team from jumping right in if they truly want to test themselves out of the gate.

For those of you who play in the FCFFL Fall weeknight league, there will be an interesting test this season. In 2005, CCPC and Coyotes both joined the league as new teams, CCPC in C, Coyotes in A. CCPC won the C in 2005, the B in 2006, the B+ in 2007. Coyotes went (4-5) in A in 2005, (5-4) in 2006, (7-2) in 2007. Which team will win the matchup this Fall when CCPC advances to A?

Unfortuneately for the Maryland teams, there is no Novice division so its baptism by fire. Hopefully next year that will finally change. If you play on a VA Novice team, imagine how hard it would be to keep your team morale intact after some of those games. It will be interesting to see how well the new MD teams do in the B (or possibly C) playoffs.

I`ve noticed we`re one of the few in VA that have a Novice league. I`m from Harrisonburg originally and it`s all Open there.
