Team A (offense) laterals the ball which is inadvertantly batted forward, past the point of the pitch, by the receiver. Is the ball placed at the point of the pitch, the point where inadvertantly batted, or the place where the ball lands? If it`s placed where the ball lands, does that award a touchdown if the batted ball lands in the endzone (as it remains the possession of the offense because it didn`t go out of bounds in the endzone)?

Good Question

why the hell would it be a TD? if thats the case teams are gonna be running around slappin balls into the endzone. seems alot easier than actually having to try and score.

I think the ball in this case would be spotted at the point of contact by the receiver. This can be viewed two different ways.
1) Incomplete pass. Lateral, then forward pass, which hit the ground. Even though it was batted forward, it could still be viewed a pass.
2) Touchback. Since the ball was not in Team A`s control when it crossed the goal line, and was still a live ball (since it was inadvertantly batted forward), it`s a touchback.

The ruling is going to be questioned, since it`s up to the ref to make the call on the "batted" ball forward.

To I think: It`s still in Team A`s possession, if not control and the touchback rule only applies to a ball that goes out of bounds in the endzone. However, in our league, a ball becomes "dead" and stays the possession of the offensive team once it hits the ground. The hypothetical I presented did not happen in our game, however, the batted ball did happen and the offense gained 5-7 yrds as a result. I asked the ref if I know I can`t make a first down and I see a defensive player running quickly behind me, is there a downside to lateraling the ball at the defensive player, knowing that if he bats it forward, I may get the first? He didn`t really have an answer.

I think

Where would you spot the ball?

Also, why would you post a hypothetical question? To try and stump people? That`s being a tool.

I`d spot it at the point of the receiver`s muff (hehe, i said muff). The hypothetical is for those who think it should be at the spot the ball hit the ground. Not trying to stump people, but thanks for thinking the worse. Btw: the ref`s spotted it at the spot it hit the ground.

""Inadvertently batted forward""
If this is the case the ball would be dead where the ball landed BUT if batted by hand or arm
ANSWER IS:
Batting a backward pass (lateral) loose ball by the offense forward is a penalty at the point of the batting. 10 yards Rule 9-sec 5 art 4..
What field was this at?? Thanks

Herndon. The offensive player lateraled the ball backwards about 2yrds to the receiver who mishandled the pitch, inadvertantly, and it ended up about 5yrds downfield. The ball was placed where it hit the ground. I have no objection to how it was called, but have never seen that called that way and wondered about the implications for a first down or td.
