What is the OFFICIAL rule against batting the ball down from the QB? I`ve always been under the impression that you can`t go for the QB`s arm, but you can bat the ball down; but according the the ref`s yesterday, you can`t put your hands up at all and you must only go for the QB`s flag. It`s kind of tough not knowing for sure the rules and having to change your assumption every week with different refs.

Never seen a ref throw a flag for batting a ball down. Not the rushers fault the QB threw the ball into a pass rushers hand or arm.
Just don`t touch the QB!

You can bat the ball, but if you hit the qb`s arm you`ll get flagged. Best bet deflag him and its not an issue.

OK, so what if the QB is starting his throwing motion as you go for his flag, managing to hit the ball/hand while getting the flag? This was flagged 15 yards on Sunday.

Until now

I thought the rule was clear. I guess not. I thought that as long as you didn`t hit the QB`s arm while he was throwing you were fine. I`m starting to see a trend. The officiating has been very inconsistant from one field to the next.

Our D-lineman batted a ball down out the QB`s arm**VS WOLVES** when he was in the throwing motion and no flag was called.. **shrug**

If you`re talking about the CN vs. PS game, both teams were called for the same foul. Although, PS got the call after an incomplete 4th and goal attempt which would have ended the game.
It`s hard to get all ball and not touch the hand or arm on the follow through. Just go for the flag.

your lineman hit psquad`s arm..thats why the ball came out like that and your player intercepted the ball...the psquad lineman hit the ball, i mean i even heard it on the sideline when he hit the ball, but it was called...either ways, the officiating on that field was shady...the younger ref didn`t even say anything the whole game and the main ref kept contradicting himself with every call...seems like every officiating crew have their own differing interpretations of the rule book.

Psquad hit the ball then hit the arm on the follow through.
Who cares obviously the penalties offset each other and we both had our fair share of shady calls. How about the "hat" penalty we got before halftime? Last week it was explained to us that a baseball hat is ok if worn backwards. Now it`s not?

You can bat the ball down once it leaves their hand, I`ve been flagged more than I would like for swatting it out their hand when their scrambling or winding up, just old habit`s.

The officiating crew at BC#2 yesterday was on top of everything. During our game they let both teams play and let the teams determine the outcome. Very well officiated game.

thats my point CN21...the officiating is so inconsistent that you can`t really do anything but laugh...Midgets, i`m glad you guys had a nice crew, i wish all our games was through that officiating crew

LOL. I begged for the hat call, it wasn`t legal last year fall either. On the fall website there`s an announcement saying that all hard brimmed hats are now a penalty, even worn backwards. Crappy rule, fair call.

The rule is clear you can try to bat the ball down at your own risk. If you make contact with the "passer" arm it is roughing the passer and a 10 yard penalty and a automatic first down.

Obviously if it was enforced in our last game, we would have known not to wear them. We were told they were allowed to be worn backwards.
Just another example how everyone is on different pages.

I agree 100% with you DFA. I wish that there was clear and consistent enforcement of the playing rules across the board. I personally would love to see a displayed game clock. I know that means extra money to pay a time keeper, but I`d prefer that to a referee checking his watch.

Apr 14, 2008 3:55 PM | | ; |
The problem I have is that he didn`t touch his arm or him 4 the matter. He just ran at him with his arms up and was flagged !!! And the refs said u can`t do that

The rule about hats has been clearly stated(even if worn backwards). And to my knowledge you can bat the ball down as long as you do not touch the QB. To be honest, the crew that was officiating Baron Cameron #1 was TRASH. First thing I heard from the refs while warming up was "Hey, do you have the rule book? Yea, its in the car."
And like my dawg Bundy said, a game clock would be AWESOME. Thru my exp in this league the crew that officiated MT View(field farthest from the school) are good.

I don`t know were you played but some fields the guys are good(knowing house rules and the rule book). Some of the refs do need to be retrained. But I`ve played in leaques were the refs didn`t have a clue

Information: There are two different organizations officiating IFFL league. One group officiates Herndon, Hook Road and Lake Fairfax and the 2nd group officiates the other fields. In order to help the groups get it right please ID the field you are playing at. Thank You You CAN bat the ball down BUT The rule is simple if you hit the QB`s arm while he is in a throwing motion in anyway it is roughing the QB. EVEN if you hit the ball! It is the chance that you are taking.. Thank you

Sure, the game in question here was at Baron Cameron, Field #1. The call, as it was explained us was we weren`t allowed to rush at the QB with our hands raised in an attempt to block the pass. I wasn`t on the field at the time, I may not be correct here, but it`s the way I heard it.

No bundy, thats what everyone thought at first but I was standing by the ref when he told #4 that you can raise your hands but you cant touch the QBs throwing hand/arm at all.

Cool, at least that`s correct. I was under the impression our player didn`t contact the QB, but there was so much going on that I`m sure it could`ve easily happened.

BC2 refs were really really good. I was wondering about the Midgets when they basically tackled the QB. I don`t know the official rules so I wouldn`t make the judgment, but I would assume it shouldve been a penalty. I was on the sideline so I didn`t have full view. So what happened that made it legal? He was pushed into the QB?
