there`s about 500 free agents, theres a zero to little probability that we will be picked up. Why not allow us to communicate and possibly make our own team?

what level are you inquiring about, and what position?

Actually, that doesn`t sound like a bad idea.

Some coach`s do check. It seems like a lot of you never show up and it hurts the rest of you.

Overall, coach is right. I`ve used the free agent list over the years to fill in at a few spots. Unfortunately if you contact 4 or 5 guys, usually only 1 will actually show up for practice. Of course the other issue is that most of those guys who do show up have VASTLY overestimated their abilities and then get upset when you have to explain to them that while they might have been great in Midget ball 15 years ago, it doesn`t apply anymore.

In our experience, you can find a gem or two on the free agent list if you read between the lines in the posts and act quickly. We`ve found quite a few duds on that board, who vastly overstated (and still do based on their repeated posts) their ability. We have, however, also managed to find a player who not only has started on our defense for five seasons, but sponsored our team for a couple seasons as well. Nice added bonus. The bottom line is that many of the free agents don`t bother to call back on initial inquiries, even if their post is only a day or two old. Other players think that they are God`s gift to football and expect to be treated like NFL free agents...instead of blending in, they try to come onto a team and dictate their own terms. Here`s some tips for the future players who post on the free agent board from a coach who`s all but tired of looking up there for a decent fill...1) Represent yourself honestly. Don`t waste everyone`s time telling everyone you run a 4.4 40 and show up to practice with your shoes on the wrong feet. 2) Too much self-promotion and hyping up your own skills tells us that you think too highly of yourself and is a red flag. Even if you can back it up, you`ll never get the chance to do it on my team. I don`t need the headaches you`ll likely bring from a chemistry perspective. 3) Respect the team concept. Every team does things differently, and it may not be the way your teams have done them in the past. If you don`t like the way a team operates, feel free to walk.

With all the crap people say about the Muddawgs, thats probably the most quality post in some time.

Former "FA"

I would agree with everyone above but I think the "FA" board is not that great when you do not have a team. It is hard to get picked up or even called by some of the good teams. I agree with what everyone posts they are the best but everyone on the board deserves to get a call or email from someone so they are able to play or start a team on there own.

If you are good, simply say "will happily try out to earn my spot". If you say anything less, we will assume you are one of the dozens of posers that clog the board. Starting your own team is a great idea, but be realistic...

To "Former `FA`": I`m willing to bet that most free agents get called by someone, but in truth, most of the so-called "good" teams are already established and have plenty of longtime players. The truth is that our games in this league are about an hour long. Carrying too many players means guys lose playing time, and/or it`s hard to find opportunities for lesser talented players to get in the game. Also, adding new players will only serve to reduce the playing time for everyone else.

There seem to be two schools of thought...one being to carry 9-11 players so that everybody gets significant playing time on both sides of the ball, two being carrying 18-22 players so that your team has distinct offenses and defenses with a few reserves. My team follows the latter, so we can`t really afford to add a player in a given season because we approach the roster cap and there`s just nowhere to put random players.

Where does the league go from here? I think that a better mechanism could be developed to help free agents find teams, but really what can be done? The intent of the List is to help partial teams fill their rosters and help individuals match up with teams that can use them. The league could hold a tryout day, like a "combine" to see the free agent players once per season, but in truth, getting a field for such an event is a hassle and most of the players on the list wouldn`t show up. This isn`t Little League. If I was a free agent and thought someone wanted my fat a$$ to play O-line, I`d go watch some games during the first weekend of the season, find a team that looked like they could use help, and talk to the coach after the game. Chances are, your problem would be solved at that point.

The "combine" idea is a good one. The baseball league I play in has a "draft" for free agents, before which they all work out as a group for the coaches who want to come and pick up players. It would give teams a good idea of who they are picking up, and the team with the worst record would have 1st pick and so on.

Give me a break.

I DON`T think its a good idea for the reasons I stated above. Again, the best thing to do would be to show up to the first week of games, look for a team that you think you could help, and talk to their coach after the game. It shows that you are interested enough to come out, which is more that we get from most free agents on the list, and we can read alot more about you from a five minute conversation that we can from a 30 word post.
