2007 Bark Bowl preliminary registration info

Tom - IFFL10:08 AM

The annual Bark Bowl tournament is held in Reston every year, the first or second Sunday in August, as a benefit tournament for the Humane Society of Fairfax County.

This year the tournament will be held August 12th. The tournament site is here.

The tournament is a 16 team tournament, hybrid double elimination.

We have 12 local slots and 4 reserved (out of town slots). When we do not use up the reserved slots we add them to the available slots. Last year we only used one reserve slot, because only one out of town team registered in the pre-registration window (Maroon & Gold). This allowed us to register three additional teams, regardless of their locality.

When we open registration for 2007 during the last week of June, this is the way it will work:

72 hours before general registration opens, the following teams will have 24 hours to secure a slot:

  • Kerns (05 and 06 team)
  • Sharks (05 and 06 team)
  • Lazy Sundae (05 and 06 team)
  • Rhinos (05 and 06 team)
  • S&S (05 and 06 team)
  • Magnums (05 and 06 team)
  • Broadlands (05 and 06 team)
  • MAC Daddies (1st non-05 team in 06)
  • Titans (2nd non-05 team in 06)
  • Goldrush (3rd non-05 team in 06)
  • PAIN (4th non-05 team in 06)
  • Vegas Nights (5th non-05 team in 06)
  • RESERVE: Harrisonburg (M&G)
  • RESERVE: Harrisonburg ???
  • RESERVE: Richmond ???
  • RESERVE: VA Beach ???

That`s 16 slots. At the 48 hour mark, the following teams will be able to secure any open slots not reserved by the above teams, first come first served:

  • Chuck Norris (6th non-05 team in 06)
  • DWC (7th non-05 team in 06)
  • Clubhouse (8th non-05 team in 06)

At the 24 hours mark, last year`s Stars & Stripes tournament (spillover tournament) teams will have an early start on registration for the Bark Bowl, IF they do not play in the July 8th Stars and Stripes, and IF there are any Bark Bowl slots remaining, first come first served:

  • Playmakers
  • Scrubs
  • Larrys
  • Wolves (Lions)
  • Redskins
  • Mutiny

This doesn`t mean that one of the 16 teams in the first list cannot secure a slot after 24 hours, it means that after 24 hours their slot is no longer guaranteed, and any one of the 3 teams on the second list can take it, and after 48 hours, any 2006 Stars and Stripes team can register for available slots.

After 72 hours has expired from the initial pre-registration time, any team can register for available slots.

Based on last year and communication this Spring, I suspect there may be no slots left after the 72 hour period - but you never know.

We`re not going to keep a waiting list or entertain pleas from teams to "get me in". This is a transparent process, and its now posted to the board.

I understand that the best teams want to play in the Bark Bowl, but this tournament started out (and continues to be) a benefit tournament for the local animal shelter. The aim of the tournament is not to haul in the best teams possible, but to financially benefit the HSFC. Some of the "top" area teams do play in the tournament, but that is not because they are top teams - its because they`ve been playing in the tournament for several years now.

We`ve always given the prior years teams the first option of returning.

Like we did last year, we will probably run an alternate tournament in August for teams who really want to play but do not get into the Bark Bowl. Stars and Stripes is pegged for July, and registration for that will start June 25th.

As for the Richmond and VA Beach slots - this is something your commissioner must decide. Reggie (Richmond) told me back in March he had a team who wanted to take the Richmond slot, so you might want to talk to him.

I believe Firm is taking the VA Beach slot, but that is not conFIRMed yet.

The Harrisonburg commissioner has also told me both slots for H-burg will be filled.

Those 4 out of area slots do have to be paid in the first 24 hours (starting 9:00 AM June 20) to guarantee entry.
